Hepatology

The branch of medicine concerned with the study, prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases that affect the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas. The term hepatology is derived from the Greek words “hepatikos” and “logia,” which mean liver and study, respectively.

In 1998, the first successful deceased donor liver transplant (DDLT) and a living donor LT (LDLT) were performed in India.

The World Health Organization (WHO) terms viral hepatitis a “serious public health problem” in India.
